What is Title I?

Title I is the largest federal program for schools across the nation. The goal of Title I is to provide a high quality education for every child.

The federal government provides funding to states each year for Title I. Each state must submit a plan to the federal government in order to get the funds. The state, in turn sends money to school districts based on the number of low-income families. Before the district can receive Title I funds, the district must submit a consolidated application to the state outlining goals, strategies and how the fiscal resources will be used.

Our Title I program at Kingsville Elementary is a school wide program with Title I teachers, tutors, and staff working together. The Title I teacher this year is Mrs. White, and five half-time title teachers are, Mrs. Deek, Mrs. Bernato, Mrs. Payne, Mrs. Makynen, and Mrs. Peaspanen. All of our teachers use instructional research-based strategies of high quality. Primarily, they go into the classroom to work with children during guided reading groups and/or provide interventions for some students on an individual or small group basis basis.

In addition to working with the classroom teacher during class time, the Title I staff:

identifies students in need of educational help

sets goals for student improvement

measures student progress

develops programs that add to regular classroom instruction

encourages parent involvement through:

volunteerism

literacy nights or activities

family reading and/ or math game night

parent/student/teacher compacts

reading and/ or math incentive programs

Parent Teacher Conferences

Parent Newsletters

participates in on-going,high quality staff development at the district level and on site.

Provides information to preschool parents so children can make an easier transition from preschool to the elementary school setting.

Collaborates with community organizations, such as the Kingsville Public Library

At the end of the year, parent surveys are administered providing feedback for assessing the strengths and weaknesses of our program and giving insight as to how to make the program more effective.

Another service available to parents is the Ohio Parent Information and Resource Center in Columbus, Ohio. Parents can learn more about ways they can help their child and ways they can strengthen their partnership between home and school.
